Like the Molave

Like the Molave

Not yet Rizal, not yet. Sleep not in peace;
There are a thousand waters to be spanned;
There are a thousand mountains to be crossed;
There are a thousand crosses to be borne.

Our shoulders are not strong, our sinews are
Grown flaccid with dependence, smug with ease
Under another’s wing. Rest not in peace;
Not yet Rizal, not yet.

The land has need of young blood
And what younger than your own
Forever spilled in the great name of freedom.
Forever oblate on the altar
The free? Not you alone Rizal.

O souls and spirits of the martyred brave, arise!
Arise and scour the land!
Shed once again your willing blood!
Infuse the vibrant red into our thin, anemic veins;

Until, we pick up your Promethean tools and strong,
Out of the depthless matrix of your faith—
In us and on the silent cliffs of freedom
We carve for all time your marmoreal dream!

Until our people, seeing, are become
Like the molave, firm, resilient, staunch
Rising on the hillside, unafraid
Strong in its own fibre, yes, like the molave!

We the Filipinos of today, are soft, easygoing,
Parasitic, frivolous, inconstant, indolent, inefficient.
Would you have me sugarcoat you?
I would be happier to shower praise upon my countrymen…
But let us be realist let us strip ourselves…
Youth of the land, you are a bitter pill to swallow.

Language, Nation

Language, Nation
By Muhammad Yamin

When it is small and tender years,
The child sleeps in its mother’s lap,
Its mother sings songs and lullabies to it,
Praising it as is right and proper,
Rocking it in love night and day,
In its cradle suspended over the land of its ancestors.

Born into a nation with its own language,
Surrounded by its family and relations,
In sorrow and in joy and in grief;
Its feelings of solidarity is consolidated
By its language, so beautiful and melodious.

We lament and wail, and also rejoice,
In times of good fortune, catastrophe, and danger,
We breathe so that we can go on living
To continue to use the language which is an extension of our spirit
Wherever Sumatra is, there is my nation,
Wherever Pertja is, here is my language.

My beloved Andalas, land of my birth,
From my childhood and youth
Until the grave envelopes me,
I shall never forget my languae
Remember, O youth, Sumatra is in distress
Without a language, the nation disappears.

Barter

Barter
By Sara Teasdale

Life has loveliness to see,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings
And children’s face looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit’s delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of space
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy,
Give all you have been, or could be.

Five Loaves of Bread

Five Loaves of Bread

She stood at the bar of justice
A frightened creature wan and wild—
In form too small for a woman,
In feature too old for a child.

For a look so worn and pathetic
Was stamped on her lovely face
It seemed that years of suffering
Was something time couldn’t erase.

“Your name?” asked the judge as he eyed her.
“Is Anna Ruiz, Sir,” said the girl.
“And your age?” asked the judge again,
Then girl replied, “I’ve turned fifteen.”

“Well Anna, I’m sorry to say,
That you have been charged today
By your town baker who said,
That you stole five loaves of bread

Do you know that stealing is bad?
And that you have displeased our God?
Do you know that you could be jailed?
And cannot be set free or bailed?”
“Your Honor, I know it was wrong,
But day in and out I walked along
Looking for work so I could earn
Even hard jobs, I’m willing to learn.

But fate’s unkind, my father is dead,
My mother is sick and lying in bed,
My brothers and sisters missed six meals,
They asked for food with eyes full of tears.

What could I do to save them from death?
I myself was losing my breath—
So I took the five loaves of bread,
But I’ll pay with services instead.”

There was silence in the courtroom,
That was suddenly filled with gloom.
The women wiped their tears away,
They heaved a sigh and tried to pray.

All dug into their pockets,
And then brought out their wallets
Sounds were heard of golden coins that fall
Into boxes passed around the hall.

The baker stood up and told the judge
“Your Honor, I’m withdrawing my charge.”
A rich lady gave Anna a job
That helped her and all that she loved.

Tungkulin Ng Wika
